Ice, Evidence and Wraps: What Really Separates Game Ready from Other Cold Compression Machines
If you’re recovering from surgery or managing a sports injury, you’ve probably noticed there’s more than one cold compression machine out there. They can look alike on paper, but the differences show up in your recovery: how cold the wrap gets, how evenly it covers the joint, and whether the machine has been tested in clinical trials.
Here’s what separates Game Ready from the rest.
1. The clinical evidence
Plenty of recovery products make big promises. Far fewer have been tested in published clinical trials, and Game Ready has.
- Knee replacement: A 2024 randomised trial using the GRPro 2.1 found that patients using Game Ready had less joint swelling, less pain and better mobility by day 21 than patients using ice packs and elastic bandages.
- Shoulder surgery: A 2024 Canadian trial of 200 shoulder surgery patients, also using the GRPro 2.1, found that median opioid use in the Game Ready group was about half that of the usual-care group.
That’s not true across the market. When Sports Health NZ reviewed the alternatives, they found no published trials for some competing machines. For another, they found only one small, manufacturer-funded study of 15 healthy recreational athletes, not patients recovering from surgery.
The takeaway: Ask whether the specific machine you’re renting has been tested, not just “cold compression” as a general idea.
2. Ice vs iceless: why the cooling method matters
Game Ready uses ice and water, and there’s solid physics behind that.
When ice melts, it absorbs about 334 kilojoules of heat per kilogram while holding steady at 0 °C. So as long as there’s ice in the cooler, the water going to your wrap stays consistently cold, session after session.
Many “iceless” units use built-in refrigeration instead. They typically run between 5 °C and 14.5 °C and can take around 15 minutes to cool down before you can use them. That’s convenient, but it’s a different level of cold therapy.
Game Ready’s ice-based system is also portable and easy to set up at home, so it suits home recovery or bringing it to the club.
3. The wraps make the difference
The machine is only half of it. The wrap is what actually touches your injury.
Game Ready wraps use patented ATX® technology, which has two separate chambers:
- one for air, which gives adjustable, intermittent compression
- one for circulating ice water, which delivers the cold
Because they’re separate, you get cold and compression together, each doing its own job. A welded dot grid inside the wrap spreads the water evenly, so you avoid warm spots and get cold across the whole area.
Wraps are anatomically designed for specific body parts. The knee wrap, for example, is 43 cm long and fits up to 81 cm around the top of the thigh. At Game Ready Ireland, we stock a number of wraps, knee, ankle, hamstring, quad and shoulder.
4. Questions to ask before you rent any cold compression machine
Whichever machine you’re considering, ask these seven questions first. Here’s how Game Ready answers each one.
1. Has this exact machine been tested in published clinical trials?
Many machines rely on the general benefits of cold therapy without being tested themselves.
✅ Game Ready: Yes. The GRPro 2.1 has been used in 2024 randomised trials for knee replacement and shoulder surgery. Patients had less swelling and pain, and in the shoulder trial they used about half the opioids of patients on usual care.
2. What temperature does it reach, and how long does it take to cool down?
Some iceless units run as warm as 14.5 °C and need around 15 minutes to cool before you can start.
✅ Game Ready: It runs at about 2–10 °C using ice and water. There’s no cool-down wait: fill it and you’re ready to go within minutes.
3. How much of the joint does the wrap actually cover?
A wrap that only cools part of the joint only treats part of the problem.
✅ Game Ready: Anatomically designed ATX® wraps go all the way around the joint, and a welded dot grid spreads cold water evenly across the whole wrap. We stock knee, ankle, hamstring, quad and shoulder wraps.
4. What compression range does it offer?
Adjustable compression lets you start gently after surgery and increase it as you recover.
✅ Game Ready: Four settings: low (5–15 mmHg), medium (5–50 mmHg), high (5–75 mmHg) or cold only. The compression pumps in cycles to help move swelling away from the injury.
5. Is it CE-marked as a medical device?
Anything you use to treat a post-surgical joint should meet medical device standards.
✅ Game Ready: Yes. Game Ready is a CE-marked medical device, supplied in Ireland by Irish medical device distributor Platform20.
6. What support do you get?
Recovery is hard enough without trying to work out a machine on your own.
✅ Game Ready Ireland: Nationwide delivery in 1–2 working days, a step-by-step setup guide, a prepaid An Post return label, and help from our team by phone or email throughout your rental.
7. Is the wrap hygienic?
Rental wraps are used by more than one person, so hygiene matters, especially over a surgical wound.
✅ Game Ready Ireland: Every unit is professionally cleaned and disinfected between rentals, and every rental includes a brand-new, single-use sleeve.
